The DTM racing series was at Spielberg this weekend, in Austria. The weekend started poorly for Team Abt Sportsline Audi’s Mattias Ekstrom, who started Sunday’s second race in 11 th place.

Ekstrom had little hope of a strong result after having been blocked by a competitor during his fast lap in qualifying. The competitor was demoted five spots, but Ekstrom still started in 11 th .

Ekstrom is the most experienced driver on the grid, though, so he didn’t let it get him down. Instead, he worked his way through the pack and by the first tire change he was coming out of the pits in third place, and then overtook Jamie Green to take second place.

“Sometimes second place can feel like a win,” said Ekstrom after the race. “It was fantastic racing today and I’m delighted for my team that worked so hard after the accident at the start yesterday in order to prepare the car perfectly again for me.”

Despite the victory, Ekstrom still sits in 10 th place in the driver’s championship. His teammate Edoardo Mortara, meanwhile, vaulted into second place this season with his strong performance this weekend. Following a third place finish in Saturday’s race, and a race win for the season opener in Hockenheim, he is now three points behind championship leader Paul di Resta, racing in an AMG Mercedes Benz.
