The 2016 FIA World Rallycross Championship kicked off this past weekend in Montalegre, Portugal, and Mattias Ekström's Team EKS already looks poised for success.  Driving their privateer-developed Audi S1 EKS RX racecars, both Ekström and teammate Toomas Heikkinen achieved positive results during the race weekend.

Sitting on the pole after the first four qualifying sessions, Ekström was a favorite for the overall victory before a semi-final mishap put him out of the top six, effectively ending his weekend.  Newcomer to Team EKS Heikkinen was much more fortune, however, as the young Fin achieved a podium result, finishing 3rd overall.

Both Ekström and Heikkinen hope to return stronger for round two at Hockenheim, where the FIA World Rallycross will be part of the festivities for DTM's season opener.
