• Driver achieves best qualifying time result of all rookies.
• Special prize presented during drivers’ parade.

Former Formula 1 driver Christijan Albers took part in the 24 Hours of Le Mans this year – the first time ever in the young driver’s career. He arrived with an Audi R10 TDI – the model with which Audi Sport won in 2008. For 2009, Albers drove one of two R10 TDIs campaigned by the German privateer Team Kolles.

For Albers, participation in the 24 Hours of Le Mans was an entirely new experience. He started out on a strong foot though, having earned the title ‘Best Rookie’. For this he won a special prize – one awarded each year to the rookie with the fastest qualifying time.

The crystal trophy was awarded on the Friday before the 24 Hour race during the traditional Parade of Drivers through the historic city center of Le Mans. “It was a good beginning of the weekend,” said Christijan Albers, “During the parade there ws a lot of special attention. We rode on the back of our car with a sign which said that I was the Best Rookie. I had to do a lot of interviews and sign a lot of autographs. With so many people in the city, it was a very unique experience. I will never forget it.”

Albers, along with his teammates Giorgio Mondini and Christian Bakkerud, finished ninth in the 24 hour race. Albers described it as difficult: “There was a lot to deal with. We had a tire burst, a wheel carrier was broken. These things and more made it difficult. But the car itself was also very good: the engine, the gearbox functioned without problems. All in all I really enjoyed it. I gained a lot of experience and I hope that my performance did not go undetected by the people at Audi Sport.”
