4 Season Test: 2007 S4 Sedan - Report 4

Last month, having performed a whirlwind road trip to Florida to attend the 12 Hours of Sebring endurance race, we’ve managed to rack some significant mileage onto our Four Season S4 sedan. Piercing through the 5,000 mile target, scheduling the car’s first service was our opening order of business.

5304 miles

With the car spending a few weeks in the Washington, D.C. region, we return to Rockville Audi in Rockville, MD for the first service. That first service is fairly routine, including an oil and filter change, brake system check, lubing of the wiper arm pivot points, capping off the windshield washer fluid, and a check and rotation of the tires. The service reminder light is also reset.

5590 miles

One sign of Spring is the New York Auto Show. Our S4 plays transport to the event for our staff on hand, its first trip to Manhattan since installing the 19-inch wheels and lower H&R Springs.

We’re experiencing some rubbing at all four corners of the car, especially on the rougher North Jersey roads leading into Manhattan. Roads on the island aren’t much better, though the S4 draws its fair share of admiring looks by people on the street.

5609 miles

Having picked up the car from the parking garage across from our mid-town Manhattan hotel, we set the navigation for our departure from the city. Amidst the tall buildings of New York City, the nav seems to have a hard time getting a proper satellite link. Yes, it finds us, but where we’re driving doesn’t exactly match up with the grid of streets on the map. According to the navigation, we’re driving through buildings.

This makes finding our way on the map to the Holland Tunnel a little more difficult, though we’re able to head that general direction until we see signs. Once out of the tunnel, the system operates perfectly.

6109 miles

We take the S4 to a family reunion for its distant cousins. One of the bigger Porsche events on the East Coast is the PCA’s Swap Meet in Hershey, Pennsylvania. Parked in a prime location by the entrance of the show, it’s interesting to see reaction to the car. More than a few Porsche owners walk up to for a closer look. We even get solicited for competition at a nearby stoplight as we leave. What’s the outcome? No comment.

6309 miles

Fuel mileage doesn’t seem much worse for the larger 19-inch wheels, but the rubbing under hard cornering prevents us from really using the car to its maximum abilites. This will require further attention when we have some spare time to focus on it.
