It’s not a terribly novel idea. Invite cars of the same European nationality to a beautiful backdrop where owners gather and cars are judged. These sorts of things happen often throughout the summer for owners of Italian and British automobiles – most notably the Monterey weekend’s Concorso Italiano. Still, you don’t often see it happen for German cars, and that’s a surprise. Fortunately for German car enthusiasts in or near the nation’s capital, an organized effort by all the German luxury manufacturer clubs allows for an anomaly of sorts – the Potomac Deutsche Marque Concours.

Organized by a panel with representatives from the Audi Club of North America, BMW Car Club of America, Mercedes-Benz Club of America and the Porsche Club of America, the annual event draws a wide range of vehicles from more than just the surrounding metropolitan area. This year, the event took place a new venue – Turner Farm Park in Great Falls, VA.

In recent years, Audis at the Deutsche Marque Concours has been thin. However, a clear schedule not conflicting with local club track events and invigorated energy for the brand in the DC region aided in a much more serious participation level than previous years.

Most of the Audi field was comprised of modern cars, from the B5 A4 onwards. A lone V8, 200 Turbo quattro and singular-but-sensational ur-Quattro were the sole representatives of what could be termed as vintage Audis.

No, the Potomac Deutsche Marque Concours is not yet at the level of major east coast concours such as Greenwich or Amelia Island. Its nature is still very rooted in its club origins, and that’s much of the charm. So too are all the German cars together on one field, from Carrera GTs to BMW 2002s. The only disappointment here is that these fine German marques don’t gather on more fields more often.
