Straight out of the box, handling of the Audi A3 is impressive. Nevertheless, there’s always room for improvement. Prepping the car for more intense track use and dropping it to an aggressive ride height were two priorities for the A3 - priorities that KW Variant 3 coilovers seemed to fit perfectly.
For those not familiar with the KW line of coilovers, the German company offers three versions with varying degrees of adjustability. Each version of the KW coilovers are constructed of stainless steel, INOX in KW brand speak. This is particularly beneficial in making the suspension more impervious snow, salt, and grime.
KW’s Variant 1 (V1) system is height adjustable only while the Variant 2 (V2) system ads dampening to the mix. The Variant 3 (V3) is based on race car technology to give the maximum performance for the street and track. V3 systems offer height, rebound, and dampening for front and rear shocks, with a lowering range of 1.4” - 2.6” at both front and rear. The intent of going with the V3 was to make the car sit low, but still ride with the comfort of the stock sport suspension and also be able to push the limits of the car while at an autocross or on a road course.
For installation of the kit, a call was made to Derek Scott of Exklusiv Motorsports in Phoenix, AZ. Derek is well known on various Audi and VW internet boards for his past projects ranging from VR6 swaps into older second-generation VW Jettas to custom body work on new VWs and Audis. His work is held in high regard here in Phoenix, largely due to his attention to detail and insight into how to make a car good looking and a hell of a performer as well.
As mentioned, the height adjustability of the suspension will lower the car 1.4” at its highest setting and 2.6” lower for the more extreme setup. Knowing the car would be riding on the 17s for a little while longer, Derek decided to experiment with the setup and slam it to the lowest setting.
With the relatively high offset of the factory wheels, there are no issues with rubbing or clearance problems. Yes the wheels sit way inside the fenders but that is something that can be dialed out with a wheel upgrade or some spacers. We know this isn’t the typical height the car “should” be at, but it does look good at this height and more importantly, it’s allowing us to see what an owner pushing for the more extreme setup will experience. One might think the ride would be bone-jarring harsh, but with the front and rear struts set at a medium level for dampening and rebound the car rides surprisingly similar to stock comfort levels with just a little more abruptness over more extreme bumps.
Compared to other coilover systems experienced, the V3’s are an impressive setup. Daily ride comfort is spot on, and tossed into a corner, body roll seems to be eliminated, as has nose dive under hard braking. At $1,925, this premium setup is not the cheapest suspension alternative out there. However, if you are looking for true street and track performance, then the KW V3 is certainly a flexible and capable choice. Considering the considerable handling and ride height changes with little compromise to rdie, the KW V3 is worth the investment.
