Furthering the celebrations of Audi’s 25th anniversary of quattro, the festivities turned to the United Kingdom this past weekend with an impressive showing by Audi UK for Rally Day at Castle Combe.
Welshman and Audi rally car driver from the 1980’s David Llewellin drove an Audi-UK owned Sport S1 quattro, the same car that contested the 1985 RAC Rally with Walter Röhrl at the wheel. Llewellin was joined by his co-driver Phil Short from Leeds. Back in the day, the team had competed in both the World Rally and British Rally series.
In addition to the S1, five additional ex-factory Audi quattro rally cars were on display and in competition at Castle Combe. These included the original Audi quattro rally car tested by Hannu Mikkola in October of 1980 – a car that is now owned by audi enthusiast John Hanlon from Manchester.
Hanlon also brought out an ex-Mikkola 1983 Audi quattro A2 “Tour de Corse” from his impressive collection.
Other notable racecars include an ex-Röhrl 1985 Monte Carlo Rally Audi Sport quattro, a 1986 Hong Kong-Beijing Audi quattro A2 and the Audi Coupé quattro in which Llewellin placed sixth on the 1987 Network Q Rally, now owned by Dave Preece.
Many Audi owners and enthusiasts, including members of the quattro Owners Club also attended Rally Day, an annual event that caters to the rally interest.
