The stars of FC Barcelona are starting out to their “title defense project” with support by AUDI AG: On the road toward repeating its historic triple win Europe’s best soccer team in 2008/09 will be on the road with Audi vehicles again. The collaboration between the tradition-steeped Catalonian club and AUDI AG is now entering as much as its fourth season. Sporting highlights during this period have included winning the Spanish championship, the Spanish “Copa del Rey” cup and the triumph in the UEFA Champions League in the past season. FC Barcelona has thus not only ascended to the summit of European soccer: The club founded in 1899 is also the first Spanish team to have won these three important trophies within one season. To top it off, the Calalonians also clinched the Spanish Super Cup as well as the UEFA Super Cup at the beginning of the current season. “It is a great honor for us to partner with one of Europe’s best club teams again in the new season. Ever since our partnership started three years ago we have been able to experience many sporting highlights together,” said Peter Schwarzenbauer, Audi Executive Board Member for Marketing and Sales, who – together with Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn, Chairman of the Board of Management of Volswagen AG and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of AUDI AG – handed over the keys to players, coaches and officials at the Castellolí circuit.
For the soccer players, the event was something like a well-played double pass, as the vehicle handover on a race track also provided them with the opportunity of an hour of driving lessons with Audi instructors on a handling course as well as a slippery skid pad. It was a perfect chance for Lionel Messi and company to improve their driving instead of their dribbling skills this time. Striker star Messi, who learned the ropes of soccer in the youth department of FC Barcelona, will be the easiest to recognize in the streets of Barcelona – the Argentinean was the only player to choose the color Mugello blue pearl effect. When it came to selecting a vehicle model, the squad of the 19-time Spanish champion by and large acted in unison – the Q7 3.0 TDI was their declared favorite. This was also the choice of newcomer Zlatan Ibrahimović who opted for deep black though. Striker colleague Thierry Henry on the other hand chose his Q7 in ice silver. But the Audi models Q5 and A5 were selected by the players as well. Audi has been FC Barcelona’s vehicle partner since the 2006/2007 season. Since then, players, coaches and officials have been on the road with vehicles from the model range of the premium manufacturer based in Ingolstadt. In return, AUDI AG presents itself at the home matches staged at the famous Camp Nou arena – Europe’s largest soccer stadium accommodating almost 100,000 spectators – as well as at joint campaigns and events.
